Helping Old Moat Eat

Helping Old Moat Eat

The Helping Old Moat Eat (HOME) project tackled food poverty in a South Manchester estate through community activities promoting growing your own food and healthy eating.

"Thank you Sow the City for all your help. We know you've gone above and beyond your own brief and put in unbelievable amounts of hours, skills, thought, and attention."

Pauline Lozoya Hocking, Leader, Old Moat Greenies

Food champions of Old Moat

Old Moat is one of the most deprived wards in South Manchester and Old Moat Primary School has a very high percentage of children with free school meals. Due to no local grocery stores, some residents must walk more than two miles to access fresh fruit and veg.

The HOME project resulted in some exciting and positive outcomes:

  • Over 500 people engaged in discussions about food poverty and offered basic food advice.
  • Four local residents were trained to be Food Champions.
  • Two HOME community events held with over 100 people attending.
  • A food growing demonstration garden was created in the middle of the estate for training local residents.
  • 27 people were provided with raised beds for growing food in their own garden.
  • 30 people completed courses on how to cook on a budget and were provided with a food safety course.
  • Over 200 healthy take away meals were sold.
